Funding your studies

Twenty awards (scholarships and bursaries) are available for students with disabilities. Awards range in value and eligibility criteria.

Scholarships are based on merit such as academic achievement, community involvement, or leadership. Bursaries are based on demonstrated financial need.

Four scholarships, ranging from $275 to $1500, are available for women studying on a part-time basis. These awards are for women students on the Vancouver campus enrolled in part-time studies for both the previous and upcoming Winter Sessions (September – April).

Affiliation Scholarships and Bursaries

Affiliation scholarships are based on merit such as academic achievement, community involvement, or leadership, and require that students be connected to a specific group. Affiliation bursaries are based on financial need and require that students be connected to a specific group. Specific groups may include,

• Clubs
• Trade unions
• Companies
• Geographic regions
• Demographic groups

The Premier Undergraduate Scholarships and Wesbrook Scholars are the University's most prestigious designations, given to senior students with outstanding academic performance, leadership, and involvement in student and community activities.

Awards range from 20 Wesbrook Scholar designations worth $1,000 each to renewable scholarships worth $20,000 over two years. Eligible students will be emailed with an invitation to attend an information session in September.

Ray Herbert Award

Awarded to the best all-round graduating student as determined by a committee of his or her peers. The criteria used in making the selection are academic achievement, athletic involvement, the ability to work with and lead others, and moral force of character. Honours Ray Herbert, D.F.C., C.D., Q.C. who rendered extraordinary service to his country both in war and peace, to his university and the law school, and to the legal profession in BC.

The George F. Curtis Student Endowment Fund was created to honour the law school founding dean’s outstanding contribution to legal education in British Columbia. Income generated by the fund is used to partially fund conferences organized by JD law students and to help JD law students attend academic events related to their studies.

A call for applications is usually solicited twice an academic year (generally in October and January). Applications for Fall 2026 are due Wednesday, October 21 at 11:59 pm PST. 

JD students attending law-related conferences can apply to the Curtis Fund for conference funding.

Please note that proof of the costs submitted in the budget needs to be submitted. This usually takes the form of copies of travel/conference receipts or estimates of travel/conference expenses (eg. printouts from websites). All receipts or proof of costs must be submitted to Allard's finance department no later than 30 days after they were incurred. More information about this process will be shared when and if funding applications are approved. 

Please note that because the Curtis Fund is small, we are not usually able to provide full funding. If possible, students should demonstrate that they can obtain the remainder of the conference costs from other sources. Most students that receive funding will only receive in the range of ~$50-$300 that may be applied against any conference fee, accommodation or travel expenses. Please note that certain expenses will not be covered including food, membership fees and parking.  

Applications from the following may be prioritized for more funding: 

• Students who are presenting or actively participating in a conference
• Students who are seeking to attend conferences providing networking and mentorship for members of groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession 

This fund is not available for participation in moots or other competitive events.  Students who wish to enter such an event as an Allard School of Law entrant should contact the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs.

If you are travelling to a conference with other law students, please indicate this in your application. Students attending as a group or club are encouraged to apply as a group for funding, and joint applications are encouraged where students are traveling or staying together at the conference. 
 

The Anne M. Stewart, Q.C. Student Emergency Fund in Law has been established by Anne M. Stewart, Q.C. (B.Sc. 1972, LL.B. 1975) to assist law students in any year of study who are faced with an unexpected financial challenge of a serious nature which impacts their well-being and/or their ability to continue in the program. The student must demonstrate that all other possible sources of support have been explored before an application is considered. All requests are determined on a case-by-case basis. Awards are adjudicated by Enrolment Services.
