Community Profiles
Ryan J. Black is a Partner at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, practicing in its Vancouver office. His work includes mergers and acquisitions, technology outsourcing, service provisioning, venture capital funding, high-technology employment, licensing and commercial contracting. Ryan works with companies across Canada and internationally who are systems integrators, consultants, developers, retailers, publishers and service providers, particularly in the software, information technology and video game industries.

JAMES Reid
Mr. Reid is an Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Fortis Inc. He was previously a partner with Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP in Toronto where he practiced for 20 years and developed a diverse corporate and securities law practice with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. Prior to joining Fortis, Mr. Reid had a 15-year relationship with Fortis, having advised on corporate governance matters, large capital market transactions, regulatory applications and mergers and acquisitions in both Canada and the United States.

Lynne Charbonneau graduated in 1992 from the Allard School of Law. Following a clerkship at the Federal Court of Appeal, she practiced as an Associate and Partner at Fasken Martineau LLP. Ms. Charbonneau has been with HSBC Bank Canada since 2005 where she is now Deputy General Counsel. Ms. Charbonneau was appointed to the Dean's Advisory Committee in January 2017.

Anna Fung, Q.C., is a graduate of the Allard School of Law and a member of the Dean's Advisory Committee for the Centre for Business Law. She clerked at the BC Court of Appeal and was called to the bar in 1986. Ms. Fung has enjoyed a dynamic career in business law, and served as President of the Law Society of BC in 2007.

Jon Conlin (class of 2011), is a graduate of the Business Law Concentration program at the Allard School of Law, which provides students with a solid theoretical and practical foundation in business law. Jon now practices as a business lawyer in the Vancouver office of a large international law firm.

Each year, the student-run Allard Law & Business Society partners with the Centre to host the annual Welcome Reception. The event brings together students, faculty, and members of the legal community for an evening of networking and casual conversations.
Exchanging Ideas
A Conversation with Robert Reich
The Centre regularly invites leading scholars from around the world to complement and expand its academic reach. In March 2017, the Centre for Business Law and the Liu Institute for Global Issues hosted "A Conversation with Robert Reich" at Allard Hall. Footage of this event is available. Dr. Reich visited the University of British Columbia as part of the Lind Initiative in U.S. Studies. From January to April 2017, the focus of the series was the Trump Impact: Change, Challenges, Responses. A Conversation with Jack Newton, CEO & Co-founder, Clio
In January 2018, Jack Newton gave a presentation about technology and the legal profession at Allard Hall. Topics included the origin of Clio and the services its cloud-based law practice management software provides, ways in which technology is changing the practice of law, and insights into the intersection of law and technology. Mr. Newton also discussed Clio's Legal Trends Report, which provides a data-driven, in-depth analysis of the legal industry. Re-writing Rules of Trade for North America: NAFTA 2018 and Beyond
On October 30, 2017, the Centre hosted a panel event featuring Tina Cicchetti, Cicchetti Arbitration; Andrew Newcombe, Associate Professor, University of Victoria, Faculty of Law; and Debra Steger, Full Professor and Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law, University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. This panel, moderated by Dr. Ljiljana Biuković, considered questions surrounding how the new NAFTA may rebalance trade between the parties, what legal rules may be rewritten, and how disputes could be resolved.
Academic-Practitioner Roundtable on Responsible Business & the Law
On July 21, 2017, the Peter P. Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics hosted an Academic-Practitioner Roundtable on Responsible Business and the Law at the UBC Sauder School of Business. This event brought together a diverse group of expert speakers, including Allard School of Law faculty members Dr. Carol Liao and Dr. Stepan Wood, to present on a range of interesting and topical areas of law relevant to business responsibility. The Centre for Business Law looks forward to co-hosting this event with the Peter P. Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics in 2018.
