Meet our current and former JD students!
Austen is a third-year JD student at Allard and graduated from UBC in 2016 with a BA in political science. Most recently, he worked as a Summer Articled Student at Hunter Litigation Chambers. At Allard, he has volunteered with the Centre for Environmental Law and Litigation through Pro Bono Students Canada, the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, and the UBC Law Review. He was a student clinician with the Business Law Clinic for the 2021-22 term, and is currently co-chair of the UBC Environmental Law Group for the 2022-23 school year.
Kara Bodie is a third-year JD student at the Allard School of Law and participated in the Business Law Clinic last term. Prior to attending law school, she completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Finance and International Business at the University of Manitoba. She worked for two years in financial services before switching to law. While at Allard Law, Kara has volunteered as an assistant editor for Law Review, a peer tutor, and a member of the Litigation Committee for the Student Legal Fund Society.
Jaden Lau is a JD Student in his third year at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, and is a member of the CBL Student Committee. He is a UBC graduate, and recently completed the Corporate Counsel Externship program at Allard. Jaden is a research assistant for Dr. Carol Liao, sat as a former executive of the Asia Pacific Law Club, and served as a clinic head for the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program.
Kayla Siu is a third-year JD student at the Allard School of Law. She worked as an auditor for two years before making the switch to pursue law. In her time at law school, she has competed in the Ian Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot, participated in the Corporate Counsel Externship, and is currently the Administrative Assistant for the Business Law Clinic.
Lily Zhang graduated from Allard School of Law in May 2020. She was a student in the Business Law Clinic and completed her JD with the Business Law Concentration. Prior to law school, Lily completed her Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo with a focus on structural design.
Olivia Veldkamp is a second-year law student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, studying Environmental Geography and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). She is interested in how business lawyers can consider the social and environmental well-being of broader society in their practice. In her time at law school so far, she has gotten involved in the CBL Student Committee, Allard Law Women’s Caucus, Allard Environmental Law Group, and Hooplaw Charity Basketball Tournament.
Kai Hsieh is a second-year JD student at the Allard School of Law and will be participating in the Corporate Counsel Externship this term. As a mechanical engineering graduate, he worked on manufacturing and process improvements at an architectural glass fabricator for three years. He is also the Operations Officer at the Centre for Business Law, and outside of Allard Law, he performs and assists with marketing in a community musical theatre group.
Kurtis Harms is a 2019 graduate of the Allard School of Law. During his time here, he was enrolled in the Business Law Concentration and the Corporate Counsel Externship.
Lindsay Frame (JD, 2020) is a second-year student at the Allard School of Law. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Integrated Sciences, where she specialized in genetics, immunology and neuroscience. In addition to being a co-president of the Allard Law and Business Society (ALBS), she is participating in the Criminal Clinic this semester. This summer, she will work as a temporary articled student at McCarthy Tétrault.
Curtis Chance (JD, May 2019) is a third-year student at the Allard School of Law. Before law school, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry. In addition to participating in the Corporate Counsel Externship, he was on the Gale Cup Moot team, and served as Co-President of the Allard Law and Business Society and as a Peer Tutor. Upon graduation he will clerk at the British Columbia Court of Appeal and then article at McCarthy Tétrault LLP.
Stephen Pederson is a third year JD student at the Allard School of Law. Mr. Pedersen earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Western University and worked as an economist for Statistics Canada prior to attending law school. He is currently a Legal Researcher at Blockchain@UBC, a Student Legal Researcher at Parr Business Law, and President of the UBC Smart Contractors.
Brandon Deans (JD 2017) is a recent graduate of the Business Law Concentration program at the Allard School of Law. Brandon graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2014. He summered in 2016 with McMillan LLP, a Gold Affiliate of the Centre for Business Law, and he will be returning to McMillan LLP to begin articling in August 2017.
Jennifer Horton is a 3L JD student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. She graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Arts in 2012. Jennifer is enrolled in the Business Law Concentration, and last semester she participated in the Business Law Clinic. After graduation (May 2017), Jennifer will article at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP.
Melissa Wells is a 2L JD student at the Allard School of Law (JD, 2020). She graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Arts & Science specializing in Cognitive Science and Economics and spent a semester abroad at UCL in London, England. Melissa is currently one of the student coordinators for the Charity Hoop-Law Basketball Tournament, a Law Student Ambassador, and is working for the Centre for Business Law at the Allard School of Law. This year, she will be a clinician for the Business Law Clinic during the spring term.
Patrick Chou (JD, 2018) is a recent graduate of the Allard School of Law. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science, specializing in genetics and pharmacology. In addition to participating in the Business Law Clinic, he was President of the Intellectual Property Law Club. Patrick will article at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP.
Sasha Platz (JD, May 2018) is a third year law student completing the Business Law Concentration at the Allard School of Law. In 2016-2017, she was the Treasurer of the Indigenous Law Students' Association, as well as a Student Ambassador. Ms. Platz summered in both 2016 and 2017 at a boutique solicitor law firm in Kelowna. She will return to the firm as an Articling Student in 2018.
Ben Schach graduated from the Allard School of Law with the Business Law Concentration in 2015. He is also the co-founder of Glory Juice Co., a Vancouver-based company specializing in bottled organic cold-pressed juice, nut beverages, raw shakes, and superfood bowls.
Jon Conlin (class of 2011), is a graduate of the Business Law Concentration program at the Allard School of Law, which provides students with a solid theoretical and practical foundation in business law. Jon now practices as a business lawyer in the Vancouver office of a large international law firm.
