#introIntroduction
As a newly established office, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office launched a series of community listening sessions to hear directly from students, staff and faculty about their experiences, priorities and hopes for equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) at the Peter A. Allard School of Law.
The Allard Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office (EDIO) conducted student listening sessions and community updates throughout March 2025 over five different lunchtime in-person sessions. Each session had no more than 20 participants in one session to ensure that all participants had enough time to be heard. The EDIO also held separate consultation sessions with staff and faculty in both term 1 and 2.
All current Allard students from 1-3L, as well as Graduate students, were invited to share their opinion on the future direction of the EDI Office to help us ensure our work was community-informed and driven. Students were also encouraged to share about their experiences at the law school and how the EDIO could better support students and build a stronger community. Overall, these sessions were grounded in our commitment to listen, learn and act together.
Across all the conversations, three key themes emerged that are summarized below:
These insights are shaping our next steps, and this report outlines both what we heard and how we’re responding. We’re committed to continuing this dialogue, building meaningful partnerships and creating lasting structures that support a more equitable and inclusive school community.

#praisePraise and Recognition
While these listening sessions were designed to be open spaces for honest feedback and critical input, we also deeply valued hearing where our school is doing well. Community members took time to share affirmations, highlight strengths, and celebrate progress, and we want to acknowledge and uplift that praise as well.
One standout example was the IDEA Leaders program, which several participants cited as a meaningful initiative that fosters a sense of belonging among students. This program was started in the summer of 2024 by Kaila Mikkelsen, Jeremy Schmidt, and Stephanie Mui. Programs like IDEA Leaders not only create connections but also serve as models for the kind of inclusive and supportive environment our community values. You can read more about the program and what students had to say on the IDEA Leaders webpage.
Additionally, faculty and staff were also consistently praised for their deep dedication to students - both inside and outside the classroom.
Participants highlighted the care professors at Allard Law bring to building strong learning environments, their commitment to student growth, and the thoughtful, personal support they offer day-to-day.
Participants recognized the dedication of staff and faculty, the passion behind new initiatives, and the positive steps already being taken to create a more inclusive and responsive environment. This feedback reminds us that while there is still work to do, we’re building on a strong foundation.
We’re grateful for the encouragement and will continue to grow with that spirit in mind.
#lookingLooking forward
We acknowledge that systemic racism, antisemitism, ablism, gender bias, and other forms of structural inequality continue to present challenges within our law school community and in society. We are committed to confronting these realities with intention and care and will work diligently to identify and dismantle the barriers that impede equity, inclusion, and justice for all.
