2021/2022 Clinic Students

Carly Gardner is a third-year JD student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, where she specialized in Geography (Environment & Sustainability). At Allard, she has been extensively involved with Pro Bono Students Canada’s Consent Project as workshop facilitator, researcher, and project coordinator. She has also enjoyed volunteering with the Allard Women’s Caucus and the Law Students Legal Advice Program. Carly is eager to participate in the Business Law Clinic during the fall 2021 semester, and is particularly looking forward to working with Vancouver’s start ups and small businesses. In her free time, Carly likes to try out new recipes and to spend time outside in BC’s backcountry.

Maxwell Guld is a third year law student who has worked the past two summers at Oyen Wiggs Green & Mutala LLP and Parlee McLaws LLP respectively. After graduating Max will be returning to Oyen Wiggs Green & Mutala LLP to article and prepare for the patent and trademark agent exams. Before studying law, Max obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Materials Engineering with Distinction from the University of British Columbia. During his undergraduate studies he worked as an co-op student at: the National Research Council, performing mining related research; the Composite Research Network, a Vancouver based composites research and development consulting group; Canfor Pulp and Paper; and Ballard Power Systems. In his free time, Max enjoys a variety of sports, games and travelling.

Jennifer Huang is an incoming 3L at Allard and is excited to be taking part in the Business Law Clinic in the Fall semester of 2021. She completed an undergraduate degree in pharmacology at the University of Alberta before starting law school. Throughout her time at Allard, Jennifer has been active in the law school community, working as an RA and volunteering with Pro Bono Students Canada, LSLAP, and the Peer Tutor Program. Following graduation, Jennifer will article with Bennett Jones at the firm's Toronto office.

Dylan Shaw is a transfer student who is in his final year of the JD Program at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. He is also a member of the Intellectual Property Club. Dylan attended first-year at the University of Saskatchewan where he was the co-founder and VP of the Law & Technology Club; he also volunteered at a non-profit legal advice clinic. Dylan worked for a law firm in Manitoba during the summer of 2020 and as a legal research assistant during the summer of 2021. Before law school, he received a Bachelor of Science in Medical Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia and also completed the first two years of a Bachelor of Science in Computer Sciences at the University of the Fraser Valley, a local university in his tome town of Abbotsford, BC. He then gained experience in sales and customer service. Dylan has a love for music, snowboarding, and all things technology.

Alie Teachman is a third year law student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Alie has a passion for labour and employment law, and will be completing her articles with a boutique workplace law firm in Vancouver next year. In her time at Allard, Alie has competed in the National Labour Arbitration Moot and worked as a research assistant to Professor Bethany Hastie on a project investigating legislative regimes aimed at the protection of foreign workers throughout Canada. Alie is excited to be participating in the the Business Law Clinic crafting innovative solutions for businesses around Vancouver, and gaining valuable insight into the unique needs of small and large businesses alike. When she is not thinking about the law, Alie can be found brewing beer in her tiny apartment or running on the sea wall.

Johanna Vanneste is a third-year law student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. She will be completing her articles with a global business law firm in Calgary next year. In her first year at Allard, Johanna was a Clinician and Clinic Head with the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, and an Assistant Editor with the UBC Law Review. During her second year, she joined the Board of the UBC Law Review as Submissions Manager, and was the Director of Communications for the Law Students’ Society. She is thrilled to be continuing on with the Board of the UBC Law Review in her third year as Editor-in-Chief (Administrative). Having worked at a non-profit prior to law school, Johanna has been exposed to the unique challenges faced by small businesses, and she is eager to work directly with such businesses to assist them navigate those challenges as a Clinician with the Business Law Clinic. She is particularly excited about the opportunity to develop her professional and legal skills while helping clients realize their business goals and navigate their legal issues. Outside of school, Johanna loves rock climbing, snowboarding, and attending concerts.

Ada Ang is a second-year JD student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law (JD, 2023). She completed her undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Immunology at UBC. Prior to law school, she worked as a Process Development Co-op Student at Stemcell Technologies, and as an Evaluation Analyst at a start-up consulting firm in Nova Scotia. She also volunteered for Startup Week Vancouver. These experiences helped her realize her passion for working with entrepreneurs and her budding interest in business law. In addition to participating in the Business Law Clinic, she is looking forward to her role as a Co-President for the Allard Law and Business Society (ALBS) and the Allard Law Thomson Reuters Student Representative. During her 1L summer, she was a Legal Intern at the pharmaceutical company, Zymeworks.
In her spare time, Ada enjoys musical theatre, playing the piano, and trying new restaurants. She also loves to cook and can make a delicious French onion soup.  Her most exciting travel experience was a trip to Ecuador where she went waterfall rappelling, tubed down the Amazon River, and went snorkeling with sharks in the Galapagos Islands.

Adrienne Ellis is a second-year law student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Before beginning law school, she graduated from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce. During her undergraduate degree, Adrienne took a variety of the law courses available to her, which sparked her interest in business law and ultimately inspired her to apply to law school. She was also involved extensively in the Sauder Philanthropy Program, held a membership in a variety of clubs, and participated in UBC’s exchange program. During her first year of law, Adrienne was very involved in Allard’s community, as a Student Clinician in the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, as a member of the Allard Law Women’s Caucus, and as a Representative for the Law Student Society’s Social Council. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, being active, and travelling.

Austen Erhardt is a second-year JD student at Allard, and graduated from UBC in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Prior to attending law school, Austen was a strategic planning and communications consultant who worked on projects across Canada alongside governments, non-profits, cooperatives and small- to medium-sized corporations. He also started and managed two small businesses, and served as treasurer and secretary of a non-profit organization. Most recently, he worked at Vancouver-based law firm Singleton Reynolds as a 1L Litigation Fellow through the summer of 2021. Austen has an extensive background in the environmental sector — as well as transportation, public health, higher education, and infrastructure — and is passionate about sustainability and technological innovation. Having personally experienced the challenges that accompany starting and growing a small business or non-profit organization, Austen is eager to help others navigate the often complex legal, procedural and policy landscape of entrepreneurship in his role with the Business Law Clinic.

Arkie Liu is a 2L student who recently graduated from UBC’s Sauder School of Business with a Specialization in Finance and a Concentration in Business Law. After taking a handful of business law courses in her undergraduate degree, Arkie was inspired to further pursue her study of law to one day return to the business world but on the legal side. Through the Business Law Clinic, Arkie hopes to gain essential skills in solicitor work and is eager to help organizations who, in turn, provide great services and opportunities in the business community. Outside of law school, you can find Arkie baking healthy desserts, playing Classical-era sonatas on the piano, cross-stitching photos of her friends’ pets, café-hopping in search of Vancouver’s best study spots, and exploring the beautiful hikes that BC has to offer.

Gabriel Rincon is an incoming third-year JD student. While at law school, Gabriel volunteered at the Law Students Legal Advice Program and supported first-year students as a peer tutor. Gabriel also worked as a research assistant, contributing to the scholarship on the duty of honest performance and negligent misrepresentation. Gabriel will also be taking part in the British Columbia Law Schools Competitive Moot. In the summer of 2021, Gabriel worked as a summer law student at McCarthy Tétrault in Toronto. While at McCarthy, Gabriel gained valuable experience contributing to matters ranging from securities issuances to competition law class actions. Prior to law school, Gabriel completed a Bachelor of Commerce at McGill University, majoring in Economics and minoring in Data Analytics. He also interned at the United Nations Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala. In the summer prior to law school, Gabriel was a research assistant on a software development project. After graduating law school, Gabriel will be clerking at the Supreme Court of British Columbia. 

Jiwan Sangha is a third-year JD student at the Allard School of Law. She graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science specializing in Cognitive Systems. During her second year at Allard, Jiwan volunteered at the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, the UBC Law Review, and the Legal Education Outreach Program. Jiwan’s experience includes researching and proposing reforms to BC’s privacy legislation and developing personal information protection practices for non-profit organizations. Jiwan spent her summer working at a national law firm in Toronto. She is looking forward to working as a clinician at the Business Law Clinic during the spring term.

Kyle Smith is thrilled to be joining the team at the RBS Business Law Clinic. Kyle recently completed his second year of the JD program in the Business Law Concentration at the Peter A. Allard School of Law (Allard) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). During his time at Allard, he has had the pleasure of being involved in multiple extracurricular activities. Throughout his first year of Law School, he acted as a student clinician with the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, serving clients on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to help resolve their legal matters. In the summer after 1L, Kyle returned to his hometown of Penticton, BC and worked as a line cook at Lake Breeze Winery. During his second year, he acted as the VP External of the UBC Law Rugby Club, a position of which he will continue to hold going into his third year. In the summer between 2L and 3L, Kyle summered at McMillan LLP. Post-Graduation, Kyle will be returning to continue his articles with McMillan. Kyle spends most of his spare time cooking and exploring different recipes and wine pairings. He also enjoys spending time close to nature and considers himself an avid fisherman.
