A new five-year initiative co-founded by the Canada Climate Law Initiative, the Toronto Stock Exchange and other Canadian organizations aims to support Canada’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. From November 24 to 30, 2025, Canada Climate Week Xchange (CCWX) will offer events across Canada that will explore climate-related challenges and opportunities.
The Canada Climate Law Initiative, TMX Group, and co-founders CPA Canada, First Nations Financial Management Board, GLOBE Series, and the Responsible Investment Association officially launched CCWX by ringing the TSX opening bell on November 22, 2024.
Allard Law Professor Dr. Carol Liao, Chair and Principal Co-Investigator of the Canada Climate Law Initiative, says that national dialogue is critical for ensuring the country is acting on climate change.
“Canada has only five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 45 percent in line with its 2030 targets under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act,” says Liao. “Cross-collaborations among academia, public and private sectors, Indigenous communities, civil society and scientists are essential to drive climate solutions and opportunities in Canada. We hope the Canada Climate Week Xchange will serve as a vehicle for dialogue among these stakeholders."
During the week, in-person, hybrid and online events will be held across Canada. “This will be an opportunity for lawyers and law students to learn from and network with peers who are working on driving climate action,” says Sonia li Trottier, Director of the Canada Climate Law Initiative. “We have some specific programming ideas that will be of great interest to the legal profession.”
The Canada Climate Law Initiative will host four events, located in Calgary, Toronto and online. There are also opportunities for the legal community to raise awareness about how law can drive climate action, says Liao. Members of the legal profession are encouraged to apply now to host events that have action-oriented outcomes and support Canada’s commitment to significantly reducing emissions by 2030.
“All lawyers will soon become climate lawyers, regardless of their specialization,” says Liao. “New lawyers will need to understand how climate change is impacting their clients and the legal profession, and how they can lead in climate action to support an inhabitable planet. Lawyers need to collaborate with other lawyers, but also with other professionals to make this happen.”
