Peter A Allard School of Law

JD Student Profile: Asia Clarke

Asia Clarke is a second-year JD student at the Peter A. Allard School of Law (Allard) and one of the Operations Coordinators at the Centre for Business Law. Before joining Allard, Asia received her Bachelor of Arts with First-Class Distinction from Simon Fraser University, where she studied Criminology and Legal Studies. During her time at Allard, Asia has served as the Co-President of the Allard Law and Business Society (ALBS) and has been involved with Pro Bono Students Canada and the Allard Sports, Entertainment, and Law Society. Outside of law school, Asia enjoys spending time with her cat Cleo, discovering new fitness classes, and playing card games (especially crib).

Why did you choose UBC and Allard for law school?

I grew up in Vancouver and wanted to establish a career in the city, so Allard was an excellent choice for me! Aside from location, I was drawn to Allard because of the exceptional experiential learning opportunities and unique course offerings. Specifically, the programs through the Center for Business Law, including the Corporate Counsel Externship and Business Law Clinic, were very exciting for me, and I would love to take part in these opportunities in 3L. This year, I have really enjoyed the opportunity to take courses with practitioners, which has provided me with a very practical understanding of the law.

What do you enjoy most about working for the Centre for Business Law?

Coming into law school, I was overwhelmed by the possible options you could pursue with a law degree. After completing my first year and working with the ALBS, I developed an interest in business law, and wanted to pursue that avenue. Coming from a non-business background, I wanted to join the Centre for Business Law to develop connections with business lawyers in Vancouver and continue to learn about the various career options under the umbrella of business law. Through the various events the Centre hosts, I am excited to foster connections within this field and help illustrate the opportunities that exist within business law.

What advice do you have for other students?

My advice for new law students would be to find your sense of community! Before coming to Allard, I attended a commuter school that lacked a sense of community, so I was drawn to the strong student community that exists at Allard. Law school can be a challenging time, but it is much more manageable when you have a group of peers to lean on. Personally, being a part of various extra-curricular activities during 1L allowed me to foster strong connections with my peers, and made my first year memorable.
