Profile

Dennis Pavlich is a professor in the Allard School of Law at UBC. A graduate of Witwatersrand University and Yale Law School, Professor Pavlich has been an academic for over 30 years and on three occasions has received awards for teaching excellence, including the University's Killam Teaching Prize and the Faculty of Law’s George Curtis Teaching Award. Professor Pavlich teaches courses on property law, the law of trusts and historical comparative law. He has also lectured extensively in the field of education law. Pavlich is the author and editor of several books and articles in his areas of legal interest including Real Estate Law in British Columbia (CCH Canada), Condominium Law in British Columbia (Butterworths), Academic Freedom and the Inclusive University (UBC Press), Managing Environmental Justice (Rodopi), and Trusts in Common-Law Canada (LexisNexis Third Edition 2020).

Professor Pavlich has served as UBC's University Counsel and as its Vice President External and Legal Affairs. He was also founding Chair and President of the Great Northern Way Trust that initiated the campus as a joint venture of UBC, Simon Fraser and Emily Carr universities and the BC Institute of Technology and provided oversight in the launching of the joint degree in digital media studies. He has served on the UBC Senate and as Vice Chair of the UBC Board of Governors. He has also been a member of the boards of several organizations including UBC Properties Trust, the Rick Hansen Institute, the British Columbia Law Institute, Festival Vancouver, and the BC Press Council. He is a former president of the Vancouver Institute and Temple Sholom Synagogue. He currently sits on the boards of the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy (officially affiliated with the United Nations) and the Allard Law Alumni Association.
