Peter A. Allard School of Law Professor Régine Tremblay has been awarded the Christine-Tourigny Award of Merit by the Barreau du Québec, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the advancement of women in law and in society.
“I’m humbled and honored to receive such a distinction from the Barreau du Québec,” said Tremblay. “I truly admire the contributions and work of each of the previous award recipients.”
Tremblay joined the Allard School of Law as an assistant professor in 2017. In July, she was reappointed as the director of the law school’s Centre for Feminist Legal Studies, which is dedicated to fostering opportunities for inclusive feminist engagement through research, teaching and community-building and to bringing the wider feminist legal community together to collaborate and exchange ideas. Tremblay also served as the Centre’s director in 2021-2022.
“I am in the process of planning the events for the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies, and I’m amazed by the quality of feminist activism and scholarship,” Tremblay adds. “I’m looking forward to hosting many outstanding feminist scholars this year.”
Tremblay teaches and researches in areas including family law, reproductive technologies and feminist and queer theories in law and has been a strong advocate when it comes to issues affecting women's rights. She is co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Family Law, co-editor of House Rules Changing Families, Evolving Norms, and the Role of the Law and is currently writing a book chapter critiquing recent family law reforms in Quebec and their potential detrimental effects on women.
As a member of the Barreau du Québec’s Family Committee, Tremblay recently contributed her expertise to inform changes to Quebec family law related to assisted reproduction and surrogacy. She is also working as part of an interdisciplinary research cluster on equity and high-quality maternity health care across birth settings.
The Christine-Tourigny Award of Merit is one of the Barreau du Québec’s highest honours. As Tremblay notes, the award will serve to further inspire her ongoing work: “At this stage of my career, I see this award as a springboard and as a responsibility – the responsibility to keep working towards achieving substantial equality from an intersectional perspective.”
