Margot Young, Director of the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies and Professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, was awarded a YWCA Women of Distinction Award on May 9, 2023.

Professor Margot Young has been awarded a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the Education, Training & Development category. The award honours women who inspire a passion for life-long learning in those around them and who have made a significant and sustained difference in Metro Vancouver.

“It’s an honour to be recognized with this award,” says Professor Young. “The women with whom I was nominated, and past winners across all the categories, represent the strength and impressive talents of women leaders in Vancouver. Vancouver has a rich and diverse feminist community, with women making a difference everywhere.”

Presented annually, the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards honour extraordinary women leaders.

Since July 1, 2022, Professor Young has served as the Director of the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies – an academic centre that is dedicated to fostering inclusive feminist engagement through research, teaching and community-building. Prior to leading the Centre as Director, Professor Young served for many years on the Centre’s Steering Committee.

In her role as Director of the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies, Margot notes that what she appreciates the most is the opportunity to mentor and be in community with feminist students. “The enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in for meaningful projects that students bring to the Centre is such a wonderful part of the job of being Director of the Centre.”

Professor Young’s commitment to social justice has made a remarkable difference for her students. “My teaching is very much informed by a commitment to social justice and to feminist transformation,” she says. “The work I do outside of the law school, with the organization Justice for Girls and as Chair of the Board of the David Suzuki Organization, similarly reflects a desire to engage in agile, creative, and meaningful advocacy for making the world a better place, starting with social justice and feminist informed legal reform and education.”

Congratulations to Professor Young on this well-deserved recognition.
