Earlier last month, second year students Lily Zhang, Connie Do, Kristen Shaw, Jillana Schmidt, and Victoria Tortora traveled to Kamloops to compete in the British Columbia Law Schools Competitive Moot, a competition between teams from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law, the Allard School of Law and Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law.

The cumulative marks were very close and ultimately the University of Victoria won the competition. However, Kristen Shaw and Jillana Schmidt won their division and Kristen was also awarded the highest marks of all the oralists.

“Doing a moot was an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Jullana. “We learned so much about contracts, legal research and writing, oral advocacy, teamwork, and about ourselves! Our favourite part was the chance we received to develop lasting friendships with each other and with our coaches. We had so much fun working together, and having this shared experience is something we will always cherish.”

The Allard School of Law would like to thank Justin Wong and Emily Snow from DLA Piper LLP for the time they gave to coach our students.  We would also like to thank DLA piper for their long-term sponsorship of the moot and the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC (CLEBC) which recently joined as a co-sponsor of the moot.

“The CLEBC has provided great assistance to students and Faculty at Allard Law over the years, and we are grateful that the province’s premier continuing education provider is now also supporting our competitive moot program by co-sponsoring the BC Law Schools Moot with DLA Piper,” said Nikos Harris, Instructor and Director of Experiential Learning at the Allard School of Law.  “The generous support of these sponsors makes this fabulous experiential learning opportunity available to our students.”
