Suing for Silence: Sexual Violence and Defamation Law

Event Description

This talk provides an overview of Professor Gray’s recent book, focusing on how defamation suits are leveraged against sexual violence survivors to block criminal and civil accountability.

Mandy Gray

Mandi Gray is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and Criminology at Trent University. She has over ten years of work experience in academia, non-profits, and healthcare. She is skilled in knowledge mobilization, project management, communications, community engagement, policy development and analysis, evaluation, and qualitative research. Dr. Gray holds a PhD and an MA in Sociology from York University. She also has a BA (Hons) in Criminal Justice Studies from the University of Winnipeg. Dr. Gray has received various awards and recognitions, including a CIHR Health System Impact Post-Doctoral Fellowship and an SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. Currently, she is a Research Associate at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services, where she is the lead researcher on a project focused on Indigenous identity disclosure within Alberta Health Services. In this role, she is responsible for research design, data collection and analysis, knowledge dissemination, grant applications, and stakeholder relationships. In addition to her post-doctoral work, Dr. Gray provides consulting services on a range of equity-related projects for a range of organizations. She has also taught criminal justice courses at Toronto Metropolitan University, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the University of Winnipeg.
