Succeeding in Difficult Conversations

This workshop is presented by the Career Services Office and Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch.

To receive the Zoom link, please register by 12pm on Feb 5 via the CBABC's event page.

Some of the hardest conversations young or new lawyers face are with clients or other lawyers.

In this session, students develop strategies to successfully navigate those tough conversations such as:

  1. how to speak to clients about unhappy, unfortunate, or unanticipated outcomes;
  2. discussing files with someone of greater authority;
  3. negotiating contracts and explaining legal fees confidently.

About Linda Parsons QC

Linda Parsons is a retired former partner with DLA Piper LLP, and now an executive coach who works primarily with lawyers on career/life choices and integration. Her coaching practice includes:  performance and leadership coaching; business development coaching, practice management, transitions and new parent coaching.

Linda studied law at University of Toronto and then relocated to Vancouver to practice, where she became recognized as ‘leading lawyer’ by Best Lawyers in Canada and was awarded the designation of Queen’s Counsel in 2008

Linda's practice supports clients in expanding the range of possibilities, ideas and choices for their personal and professional lives. Linda's process translates 'choices into action'. Action will look very different for different clients. For some, it may mean achieving specific goals or taking a different path and, for others, performing at a more effective level or integrating new practices and habits.

Linda's work is informed by my 30-year corporate legal career, executive coach training at Columbia University, public and private board experience, and deep commitment to family and community.

About Chantal M. Cattermole

Chantal's work is centered on minimizing the damages left from divorce and family disputes. This represents the core approach of Chantal’s work as she assists people through these challenges in a positive and productive manner, while having difficult conversations.

Chantal understands the visceral nature of family conflicts and manages to simplify these complex issues into sensible solutions while building relationships or keeping them intact. She is experienced in multi-generational estates planning to protect and preserve family wealth, knowing this requires long-term vision and communication. Her pleasant demeanor guides clients through cost-effective resolutions outside the courtroom, including collaborative law, mediation and negotiation.

Conversely, she is acutely aware that sometimes litigation is the only course to resolving a dispute when these avenues reach an impasse. Chantal’s results-driven approach allows her to help people feel they are represented and supported in the fullest extent, while minimizing costs whenever possible.
