Description of Event
The refurbished cruise ship to house LNG workers sits in Vancouver’s harbor, ready for the journey to Squamish where it will be put to use. The 2019 national inquiry in MMIWG cautioned about the risks to safety and security of Indigenous women and girls from such resource extraction “man camps”. As Sue Brown, a lawyer and director of legal advocacy at Justice for Girls states: “"The information that's been collected here and abroad is that there is absolutely no doubt that there is a link between sexual exploitation, sexual violence, physical violence and these camps." This panel will explore plans for the Squamish LNG project from this perspective, bringing together Indigenous women leaders, and their advocates, to discuss risks, strategies, and ongoing legal challenges to the Squamish project.
