Listening Session on Race

Event Description

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a Listening Session on Race. This will be an opportunity to discuss the incident of anti-black racism at Dean Raymond Atuguba’s lecture on November 9, 2023 and its impact on the law school community.  We will also discuss race and our communities’ experiences with anti-black racism on campus and in British Columbia.  Dr. Arig al Shaibah, UBC’s Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, and Dr. Ainsley Carry, UBC’s Vice-President, Students, will participate in the discussion and share their perspectives on these issues.  I look forward to this timely and important conversation.

Dr. Arig al Shaibah

Dr. Arig al Shaibah has amassed nearly 15 years of experience working as a senior administrator in three Canadian research-intensive universities advancing accessibility, employment equity, and inclusive excellence goals. She served as McMaster University’s inaugural Associate Vice-President Equity & Inclusion, as Dalhousie University’s Vice-Provost Student Affairs and Interim Executive Director for the Human Rights & Equity Services, and as Queen’s University’s Assistant Dean Student Life and Learning as well as Assistant Dean Residence Life, Diversity, and Community Development.

Dr. Ainsley Carry

Dr. Ainsley Carry joined UBC in 2019, and has made many notable achievements during his first term. A passionate advocate for students, he led the restructure of the VP Students portfolio to elevate student health and career services. He was also pivotal in the launch of the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars program, while ensuring that the VP Students portfolio demonstrates a continued commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and Indigenous engagement.
