Who we are: Decrim is a group of law students focused on advancing the rights and well-being of people who use drugs and people who engage in sex work. We (a) organize events for law students to learn about substance use and sex work, (b) advocate for legal and policy reform, and (c) organize/volunteer at harm reduction events and initiatives within the broader community. Even those who do not necessarily agree with our decriminalization position are welcomed. We encourage good faith disagreement and debate as essential to refining our positions and reaching common ground.
What we accomplished last year:
-Successfully lobbied UVic to add a "Good Samaritan" clause to their non-academic misconduct policy, modelled after the federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; talks with UBC and other BC universities are ongoing
-Trained 20+ students in naloxone administration, i.e., how to reverse an opioid overdose
-Hosted a Harm Reduction Legal Advocacy Panel with the former Chief Coroner of BC and two leading harm reduction lawyers
-Visited the first clinic in North America to offer diacetylmorphine (prescription heroin) to severely substance-dependent clients
Networking and job opportunities: Decrim has strong ties with lawyers and professionals working in the public interest, especially in the areas of harm reduction and Indigenous rights. Through our networks, members have gone on to acquire legal employment at leading firms and organizations in areas including harm reduction law and policy, Aboriginal and constitutional law, and environmental law.
