ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Paul Champ is a labour, employment and human rights lawyer who is also well known for public interest and constitutional litigation. Paul manages his own four-lawyer firm in Ottawa. In addition to individuals and trade union clients, he frequently acts as legal counsel for organizations such as Amnesty International, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. Paul and his clients have established legal precedents in constitutional law, privacy, racial discrimination, freedom of association, the state duty to prevent torture, prisoners’ rights, and corporate accountability for abuses in foreign countries. Most recently, Paul was lead counsel in Fraser v Canada, a landmark Supreme Court of Canada case on adverse effect discrimination.
In 2010, Paul was honoured to receive the Reg Robson Civil Liberties Award from the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. In 2013, he was honoured by the International Commission of Jurists with the Tarnopolsky Award for outstanding contributions to domestic and international human rights.
