Keynote event featuring Sheri Meyerhoffer, Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise. Ms. Meyerhoffer will reflect on her experiences establishing the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise office and sustainability challenges in mining. This event is part of a public talk series hosted by the Killam Connections Award-winning course, Heavy Metal: The Future of Minerals and Sustainable Societies, led by Professors Nadja Kunz, Carol Liao, Scott Dunbar, Allison Macfarlane and Philippe Tortell.
Ms. Meyerhoffer was appointed as Canada’s first Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise on April 8, 2019 by the Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification. She is a Canadian lawyer with 17 years experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, and 13 years experience in international governance, rule of law and human rights. She has worked in Bhutan, Bolivia, Cuba, China, India, Jamaica, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia and the USA. Ms. Meyerhoffer has a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan and is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School with a Master in Public Administration and Certificate in Management, Leadership and Decision Sciences.
The event will be moderated by Professor Sara Ghebremusse, Allard School of Law. Opening remarks will be delivered by Susan Porter, Dean & Vice-Provost of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Heavy Metal: The Future of Minerals and Sustainable Societies is a graduate course cross-listed across four departments and disciplines: UBC School of Public Policy & Global Affairs (SPPGA), UBC Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS), UBC Keevil Institute for Mining Engineering, and UBC Allard Law. The course received and is funded by the Killam Connections Award issued by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UBC.
The event is open to the public and qualifies for 1.5 CPD Credits. Lunch will be provided to registered attendees.
