Until the arrest of MENG, Wanzhou in Vancouver and the detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in China in December 2018, Canada and China were continuing to improve and expand their friendly cooperation in legal and judicial matters.
Experts from both China and Canada will describe the past pillars of cooperation and experiences of both sides to date. There will be a focus on the importance of judicial independence in Canada, which has contributed to many of the misunderstandings in the current Canada-China relationship. We will also explore the evolution of the rule and law in China and the contributions that Canada has made to its development. Coming out of the session, it is hoped that both sides (including lawyers, scholars and officials) will seek to build trust and respect in areas of common interest (such as law enforcement, rule of law and transparency). That said, it is recognized that there are very significant challenges to the current situation that must be first resolved.
