UBC Stepped Care Model of Wellbeing
Counselling at Allard School of Law is part of the UBC stepped care model. Stepped care is where the level of intervention is matched to the level of the presenting issue. In your first session the nature and urgency of your concerns and your goals are assessed and an individualized plan to improve your overall wellbeing is developed.
Research on student mental health suggests that diversity in care delivery is highly effective in helping achieve wellbeing goals. This diversity of care can include:
- campus resources offered by professional and/or student peers,
- workshops,
- groups,
- web-based programs,
- community resources, or
- individual counselling.
Counselling Services
Law students may access counselling services at either Allard Hall or UBC Counselling services at Brock Hall. The Student Wellbeing Counsellor at Allard Hall is closely linked to the UBC central Counselling Service and operates on the same processes and stepped care model. The in-house Student Wellbeing Counsellor at Allard Hall allows for easier access to counselling for law students, and also for a wellbeing program that accommodates to specific law student wellbeing needs.
Some people worry about asking for help because of stigma, of believing that asking for help means admitting that something is wrong.
Stigma impacts recovery because “the sooner help is sought the better the results”. (Canadian Mental Health Association)
