Faculty Affiliates

Erez Aloni's primary research interests center around the legal regulation of adult relationships and complex family structures. He stages the family as an institution influenced by a broad range of laws, norms, and economic structures. His particular focus lies in understanding the distributional outcomes of legal regulations within households and exploring the intersection of private law with family law.

Patricia M. Barkaskas is Métis from Alberta. Her research focuses on the intersection of justice and law, including access to justice, clinical legal education, and decolonizing and Indigenizing law. She is particularly interested in examining the value of Indigenous pedagogies in experiential learning, clinical legal education, and skills-based legal training, and disrupting the normative violence of colonial legal education.

Janine Benedet joined the law school faculty in 2005 and served as Dean pro tem. Her first stop after her L.L.B. graduation from UBC was a clerkship with fellow UBC alumnus Justice Frank Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada. That was followed by graduate studies – leading to both an LL.M. and an S.J.D. – at the University of Michigan, where she also taught as a Visiting Faculty Fellow. She practiced labour law in Toronto from 1997 to 1999, and was a member of faculty at Osgoode Hall Law School from 1999-2005.

Jie Cheng is Associate Professor of Law at the Peter A. Allard School of Law. Her teaching and research interests include Chinese law and government, comparative constitutionalism, judicial politics, freedom of information, property law and Hong Kong Basic Law. Prior to joining the Allard School of Law, she taught at Tsinghua University School of Law from 1999-2019.

Professor Dauvergne has been working in the area of refugee, immigration, and citizenship law over the past quarter of a century.  For a decade she held the Canada Research in Migration Law.  In 2012, Dauvergne was named a Fellow of the Trudeau Foundation in recognition of her contributions to public discourse in Canada. In 2019 she was honoured with a Queen’s Counsel designation.

Professor Alexandra Flynn’s teaching and research focus on municipal law and governance, administrative law, and property law. She has published numerous peer-reviewed papers, public reports, media articles, and a book on how cities are legally understood in law and how they govern, including the overlapping geographies and governance of city spaces, and the formal and informal bodies that represent residents.

Dr. Cristie Ford’s research focuses on regulation and governance theory, securities and financial regulation, and administrative law. Recently she has expanded her work to include access to justice and governance of the legal profession.
