Chuka Achu

Chuka Achu recently completed his PhD in Law at Western University, where his research focused on how developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa can leverage Canada’s climate change policy approach through legal transplant mechanisms to address the impacts of climate change while supporting the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Prior to pursuing his Doctorate, Chuka earned his LLM from Queen’s University, where he received the Law Foundation of Ontario Award. He also holds an LLB (Honours) from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria. Additionally, during his PhD at Western Law, Chuka was awarded the Western Law Graduate Scholarship and several Ontario Graduate Scholarships. He has actively participated in both international and local conferences, and served as a fellow at the Centre for Climate Change, Sustainable Livelihoods and Health (WeCLISH) at Western University, where he co-organized and presented at WeCLISH conferences.

Chuka’s research interests include international environmental law (with a particular emphasis on climate change mitigation and adaptation), constitutional law, public law, environmental law, and comparative law. Furthermore, Chuka has explored subjects such as mining law, Indigenous law, and mineral resource development in Canada, which is the focus of his post-doctoral research. He has published in the AJICL, a peer-reviewed journal.
