Professor David Duff has been recognized with the Jim Taylor, QC Faculty Scholar Award for his outstanding contributions to the Allard School of Law.

The award honours Allard Law faculty members who consistently go above and beyond in their service to the law school.

“I’m very lucky to be able to work with so many great colleagues and honoured to have been nominated for and recognized with this award,” said Professor Duff. “I think we have one of the best jobs in the world, and owe something to the community that makes this possible.”

While presenting the award, Anne Uteck, Associate Dean, Academic Affairs, noted the extraordinary amount of energy and time Professor Duff has devoted to strengthening the law school community. “David has consistently demonstrated a commitment to service that goes above and beyond expectations,” said Professor Uteck.  “His dedication to teaching, our students and mentorship exemplifies the spirit of the Jim Taylor Award.”

As his nominators explained, Professor Duff’s service has made Allard Law more efficient, professional and collegial. Since joining Allard Law in 2009, he has served as Associate Dean, Academic, and played a key role in supporting faculty governance and multiple curriculum reform projects.

Professor Duff also led the development of the law school’s Tax LLM program, which he describes as a meaningful point in his career, and now serves as the program’s director. “I continue to enjoy teaching tax classes and working with [Allard Law staff members] Tania Astorino and Alan Grove to make the program a success,” he added.

A strong belief in the role of law to resolve conflict and advance justice has kept Professor Duff motivated in his service work. “A law school that cultivates and exemplifies these values has an essential role to play in a free, fair and democratic society,” he noted.

In addition to his significant service contributions, Professor Duff teaches and researches in the areas of tax law and policy, distributive justice, environmental taxation, and corporate and international taxation. He has published books and articles on a wide range of topics, including Canadian income tax law, tax avoidance, and climate change policy. His work has been cited extensively by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Allard Law is deeply grateful to Professor Duff for his dedication to the law school community.
